Change the way you teach speaking and pronunciation

In this asynchronous course, learn a step-by-step method that will help your students become better communicators by developing an awareness of effective communication, gaining agency in the process of becoming better speakers, and increasing confidence in using authentic materials. As the course title suggests, this course will help teachers and learners develop an awareness of how to become an effective communicator, show teachers how they can help learners develop agency in the process of becoming a better speaker, and this is achieved through the use of authentic materials and tasks- so learners can develop their own voice throughout the process.

As the name of the course suggests, this course is not only about teaching pronunciation. While you learn a lot about soundscripting and how to extend it to different teaching contexts, you are also provided with food for thought about your own teaching practices. During the course you become aware of what really matters when it comes to teaching pronunciation and how to raise awareness of aspects of pronunciation that will influence learners’ production. Thank you a lot for a great course structure, interesting examples, a research-based approach, and nice quotes.

One of the best online courses I have taken so far! Well-rounded, straight-to-the-point, relevant and theory-light content, focused on the most problematic grammar areas for students (tense, aspect, and voice). Clearly structured units, easy-to-complete bite-sized sections, ranging from short video presentations to practical tasks. Plenty of opportunities to personalize the knowledge and deepen understanding through reflection tasks and reference to your own teaching context. This was definitely a very enriching and positive experience. It made me realize how inadequately Grammar is represented in mainstream EFL coursebooks and the negative effect this has on both teaching and learning. It helped me readjust my focus from the form to the use when teaching grammar and definitely raised my language awareness as a whole.

I've come away with a refreshed approach; not only having a broadened theoretical base, but also practical elements on how to apply it. I'm excited to take what I've learnt into the classroom and give my students the opportunities to develop transferable skills that they can use at home. This course is not just interesting, but highly useful and practical.

Take Shadowing to the Next Level with Soundscripting

Soundscripting & The AAA Learning System

You will learn how to use a lesson framework for consistently turning boring pronunciation lessons into motivating and meaningful lessons.

  • Awareness

The process of learning a language requires drawing connections between new information and old information. In order for this to happen, teachers need to promote awareness of the language in their students. In this course, we provide examples and activities that raise awareness of pronunciation features - stress, intonation, pacing, and chunking.

  • Agency

Languages cannot be “taught”; languages are learned. It is the learners’ desire to learn and motivation that controls learning. Most attempts to promote motivating activities are dull and unproductive. The best way to promote this is by tapping into learners’ intrinsic motivation: their interests, personal achievements, and future selves in the language. The course promotes the cultivation of a sense of curiosity, risk-taking and personal responsibility and achievement.

  • Authenticity

This involves not only presenting materials and tasks which are authentic, but also taking into consideration the learners’ social contexts and their future interactions in the language - understanding who the participants will be in their future contexts (e.g. meetings, academic presentations, seminar discussion). By leveraging the power of Soundscripting and the interconnectedness of the triple AAA principles, you can dramatically transform your learners academic, educational, careers, and lives.
